Volunteer of the Year, Jill Krum, Huntington Beach:
Krum has been volunteering for 10 years, assisting with the Race for the Cure, in the Komen office, and at health fairs, where she enjoys educating the community about breast cancer. She is passionate about making sure every woman has breast self-awareness.
Outstanding Youth Volunteer, Jill Jelnick, Aliso Viejo:
A senior at Aliso Niguel High School, Jelnick has been volunteering with Komen for the past six years to honor the memory of her grandmother, who passed away from breast cancer. She is also the founding president of the Pink Ribbon Club at her school.
Outstanding Youth Volunteer, Daniel Angerita, West Covina:
Angerita, a 21-year-old senior at California State University, Fullerton, is a new volunteer that has shown great dedication, giving of his talents and services as a videographer for the Race for the Cure and the Pink Tie Ball. He has been volunteering with Komen for the past year.
Outstanding New Volunteer, Diane Swintal, Irvine:
Swintal has been volunteering for the past two years, most recently serving as the Race for the Cure national sponsor liaison in 2009. She has chosen recently to devote most of her time to the cause, stepping into roles at the Race, the Pink Tie Ball, and in the Komen office.
The Promise of One Award, Pat MacKenzie, Huntington Beach:
MacKenzie has volunteered for the Race for the Cure for the past 17 years, taking on responsibilities encompassing set up, clean up, and everything in between. She has also committed time on the Pink Tie Ball and Breast Health Symposium committees with a tireless willingness to fill any role in which she is needed.
The Promise of One Award, James Kawakami, Costa Mesa:
Kawakami has been a volunteer for the past eight years, including serving in various vital roles at the Race for the Cure. He draws inspiration from his mother, who passed away in 2001 after living with breast cancer for 18 years.
Komen Warrior, Marica Pendjer, Orange:
Pendjer has been an avid volunteer for the Komen Orange County Affiliate since the Race for the Cure in 1999. She celebrated her 11th Race for the Cure in 2009, leading the charge as the Race chair. She has served as president of the Board and has been involved in numerous other events and initiatives, including being a grant reviewer, and serving on the governance committee, as well as the Pink Tie Ball and Breast Health Symposium committees.
Partner for the Cure, Ed Arnold:
KOCE Real Orange host Arnold is being honored with an inaugural award this year for his outstanding dedication to the cure. A role model in the business community, Arnold was one of the original Pink Tie Guys and has been an integral part of the Race for the past 18 years.
Also honored for their service was the group of volunteers who tirelessly organized the 7th annual Reds, Whites and Greens Charity Golf Classic, which has raised $835,545 for Komen research and breast health services. The group is led by Costa Mesa resident Cindy Thomsen, an avid golfer, business owner and a two-time breast cancer survivor who is passionate about ending breast cancer forever.
