Breast Health Symposium

The 2007 Komen Breast Health Symposium's purpose was to provide comprehensive and cutting edge breast health education to support Orange County's diverse communities become more powerful advocates for themselves and others - and the Komen Orange County Affiliate once again came through with shining colors. Bold hues of orange and pink to be exact, a strong statement about the strength of spirit shared by breast cancer survivors, co-survivors, breast health advocates and the thousands of brave individuals battling the disease here in our community.
Held on Saturday, March 31, at the Anaheim Marriott, the 2007 Breast Health Symposium & Luncheon wove the event theme, Many Faces, One Voice, through a day of presentations, exhibitions and educational sessions all geared to heighten community awareness about issues surrounding breast health, breast cancer, prevention, treatment and research.
"The quality and variety of information shared at this year's Symposium was truly exceptional," said Komen Orange County Affiliate President Marica Pendjer. "Over the years, this event has evolved to embrace all of our diverse communities. It has grown and developed to become a dynamic force for awareness that will one day wipe breast cancer off the face of the earth. It's a not-to-be-missed opportunity for men and women wanting to learn more about the latest advances in breast health and cancer treatment, as well as strategies for coping with the many physical and emotional affects of the disease."
Following opening remarks by Executive Director, Lisa Wolter and Event Chair Marie LaFargue, a Keynote Plenary Panel of doctors leading the charge here in Southern California set the tone for the event. The educational message carried forward into the first breakout session with presentations such as Getting the Best Breast Health Care and Sexuality, Intimacy and Breast Cancer. After a visit to event exhibitors, it was back to work for participants eager to learn more in the second breakout offering of the morning with Complementary and Alternative Medicines, Nutrition & Exercise for Breast Cancer Prevention and other informative talks.
The event culminated in an inspirational luncheon celebration where the Many Faces, One Voice theme took center stage through stirring speeches, emotional presentations and inspirational award presentations. Susan G. Komen for the Cure Chairman of the Board Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., spoke about his long-time involvement in supporting the cause of breast cancer treatment and research with an eloquence and passion that brought the crowd to its feet. Equally moving was the PhotoVoice Project video presentation highlighting personal stories of men, women and children affected by breast cancer and the barriers to care in their communities. Awards went out to two remarkable women on the frontline of the battle against the disease: 2007 Komen Most Inspirational Breast Cancer Survivor Chris Tannous and Komen Outstanding Breast Health Advocate Jane Ka'ala Pang. During the concluding Survivor Tribute, participants stood in awe at the courage of survivors who held their glowing candles high - a symbol of the fire that burns in all of us to end breast cancer forever.
