Volunteer Outreach Coordinator
Overview: The Volunteer Outreach Coordinator is chiefly responsible for recruiting, managing, and serving as the supervisor for all volunteer activities and projects, including special events, programs, and the Race for the Cure. This position works closely with the Executive Director, Programs, and Development office to identify volunteer needs, train volunteers, and coordinate the activities of the volunteers. Reports to the Director of Volunteer Services and interacting with the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers, responsibilities of the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Job Functions
- Establishes and maintains a volunteer program that meets the needs of all events and program activities including Race for the Cure, Breast Health Symposium, Pink Tie Ball and Third Party events.
- Works with Database Administrator to ensure volunteer database is up to date and correct; providing data and reports on volunteer activities as necessary.
- Develops and conducts a comprehensive volunteer training program including orientation, and other ongoing trainings throughout the year.
- Coordinates volunteers to fill ad hoc staff and committee requests to meet organization’s needs and requirements.
- Develops and implants a community-wide volunteer recruitment and retention plan, including volunteer appreciation strategies utilizing Komen’s Volunteer Appreciation Policies.
- Develops and maintains a periodic Volunteer Newsletter for all volunteer activities.
- Delivers presentations to companies and corporations, community groups and associations, and faith-based groups, to recruit volunteers and support for pre and post event ceremonies.
- Manages routine volunteer activities, such as the event-related mailings.
- Assist with the Race for the Cure logistics, while coordinating with the Race Chair(s), Executive Director and Race Management Event Company for the completion of a successful annual event.
Other duties
- Work with Board President and Board Development Chair as needed for board member orientation, trainings and support.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to be successful in this position:
- Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible and successful experience in the volunteer management and supervision in a high-paced environment.
- Experience mobilizing community-based organizations
- Demonstrated ability to provide volunteer leadership and organize volunteer activities effectively.
- Ability to communicate with community contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to use considerable judgment, decision making and imitative required to establish work procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communications formats, strong organizational, detail and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently, to work under supervision, to work under pressure, and to work in a team-based and goal oriented environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
- Ability to actively participate in the logistical and operational tasks of all events, as well as pre and post activities.
Must maintain the highest level of personal and professional integrity. A working knowledge of Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s vision and programs is required, along with a professional-level understanding of solicitation methods and fundraising principles.
Benefits: Komen pays for 100% of healthcare benefits for their employees; 401K match. Salary range $29,000-$32,000.
INTERN POSITIONS
(Intern Application)
Programs Intern
TIME FRAME- Ongoing, flexible hours per week.
PRIMARY DUTIES- Assist with projects related to programs, education, and survivorship. Activities vary based on the time-frame; year-round tasks include assisting with the wig bank, Speakerís Bureau program, health fairs, Mammogram-a-thon screenings (May and October), community and treatment grants, and library and resource center educational outreach. Respond to inquiries from the public about the Organization and breast health.
QUALIFICATIONS- Interest in non-profit or event management, with a focus on healthcare. Strong computer and customer service skills. Strong writing, speaking, organizational and computer skills. Detail-oriented, self-motivated and the ability to work independently and with a team. Ability to work on several projects at once. Knowledge of breast health issues a plus. Bilingual in Spanish helpful. Must have transportation.
Development Intern
TIME FRAME- Ongoing, flexible hours per week
PRIMARY DUTIES- Assist with various fundraising and special events such as BMW Ultimate Drive, Fit for the Cure®, and the Komen Race for the Cure®, Orange County's largest fundraising event. Assist with database management, answering phones, mailings, maintaining inventory of merchandise, media and public relations, and responding to inquiries from the public about the Organization, special events, and the Race for the Cure®.
QUALIFICATIONS- Interested in non-profit or event management, public relations or marketing. Strong organizational and computer skills. Good communication and customer service skills. Attention to detail and the ability to work on several projects at once. Familiar with the Orange County area. Must have transportation.
All internships offer flexible scheduling from Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Some positions require attendance at committee meetings and special events, and occasional evening and weekend hours. All internships are unpaid. All candidates should be enrolled at a college or university, exhibit strong organizational skills, good customer service skills, and show enthusiasm.
