More Than One Million in Grants for 2007

On Thursday, December 7, more than 60 people attended the Grant Awards Ceremony and Open House, helping us reach a milestone in the Komen Orange County Affiliate's Community Grants Program.  On this historic evening, $1,048,554 was awarded to 18 distinguished local organizations - the highest amount of community grants awarded in the Affiliate's 15 year history.

The primary tool used to focus the Affiliate's grant funding is the Community Profile, a comprehensive report of Orange County's breast health services.  Information from this report is instrumental in guiding our Affiliate's activities, so as to not duplicate programs already in place and focus our efforts on addressing any unmet breast health and breast cancer needs.  For the 2007 Community Grants cycle, information was used from the 2006 Community Profile.

The 2006 Race for the Cure® was Komen Orange County's most successful race to date, raising more than $2.5 million.  The success of the event enabled the Affiliate to increase the amount of grants awarded for 2007 by $300,000.   In addition to the Community Grants Program, Komen Orange County will provide more than $350,000 for diagnostic, treatment, and critical care support services for people living in Orange County who are uninsured or underinsured and do not have any other means to pay for breast health care.  Nearly $650,000 will go to the Komen National Award and Research Grant Program, one of the most cutting-edge and dynamic breast cancer research programs in the world.   Funding for research is vital to fulfill our vision of a world without breast cancer.

The Komen Orange County Affiliate would like to thank the many people involved in the Community Profile, the Community Grant Review Panel members, and volunteers who helped organize the event.  A special thanks goes to all the wonderful advocates who helped raise money during our Race for the Cure® - our sponsors, team leaders and individual donors.   Thank you to everyone for working together to help fulfill our mission.
